LAST MINUTE CHANGEWe wanted to give everyone a quick update on our speaker tomorrow. Shane Lindner has tested positive for Covid. So he will not be coming down to speak at our July club meeting. We will hopefully work him back in the speaker schedule in the near future. We have scheduled another presentation in his place. Thanks for understanding! Lee Shadbolt, will give the presentation “Discus 101.”  Lee is a longtime member of JRAS and currently serving as past president and a longtime hobbyist and breeder of the magnificent discus fish.  The presentation will provide a brief history of the development of the discus hobby, guidelines for keeping discus fish and “Lessons Learned” along the way.  It should be informative enough for those already keeping discus and basic enough for those considering discus as a hobby. Bio for Lee Shadbolt   Lee Shadbolt is a lifetime aquarist and has maintained fish from a very early age. He began by cleaning filters and washing tanks for his father, who was an angel fish breeder.   Later, he worked for his grandfather’s tropical fish wholesale store. Lee began keeping wild discus in the early 1970’s and started breeding discus in the mid 1990’s.  He currently maintains several tanks and a koi pond.  Lee is currenty serving as past-president to JRAS. He has an extensive knowledge of and has attended lectures and visited numerous discus breeders/importers including: Jack Whattley, Bing Seto, Gill Curtin, Peter Thode (Gwynnbrook Farms), Discus Hans, and Joe Szelesi.  Lee is the president of Commonwealth Architects.

I am in the same situation. can breed corys, some tetras and plecos. Had a nice breeding group of peacock gudgeons that I lost/ Only thing that seemed to change was the pH which went down with no KH, Thanks for the reply and support,

I have some tanks that have gone down to 6.1 and 6.4. In one I lost all of my peacock gudgeons. would like to keep it more stable. Adding equilibrium and using tap water for the most part.

Any luck getting them to breed? You said you had three similar groups. I know it is a long shot but could there be a Sexual Dimorphism beyound what is common in corys?

You are on. I check and rinse plants before bagging. I have managed to eliminate duckweed from many of my tanks but I do keep some for my goldfish and goodeids.

Welcome aboard. Live bearers are often overlooked in the hobby. There are a number of species which have been overlooked. I have done Goodeids, they are interesting and can be a bit trickier to breed at first. They hold there own with barbs and cichlids. I still keep a tank of Ameca splenda with a couple of Xenotoca eiseni. I keep Odessa barbs. with them and there are no issues. We have a couple of members that breed Goodeids. I have been tempted to try some Giant Sailfin Mollies (Poecilia velifera). Look forward to seeing you at the Tailgate. Rich Trownsell

I will be bringing some of the fish I have been breeding, Long Finned White Clouds, Coryadorus Aneaus (Bronze), Peacock Gudgeons, Ameca Splender and Bristlenose Plecos (fry). Will also have some plants including Amazon Swords. Will post prices and pictures closer the date.

@dheifetz18 We have a virtual meeting with zoom at 7pm Sept 23rd. The topic is photographing aquariums and fish. I am sure there will be an announcement and discussion of upcoming events. More information on how to join the meeting is in the upcoming announcement forum.

@dheifetz18 Ir will be announced on the web site. We are tentatively looking at the 3rd weekend in October with a rain date. Our concept is that items to be sold would be put on the website with pictures and people could pre order them. This would allow the orders to be pre bagged.

Normally we have a full day auction in the fall and a half day auction in the spring. In addition to this we have a mini auction after each of our monthly meetings. With the Covid19 restrictions we have not had any of these. We are looking to have a swap in later October in a parking lot. Members would list what they had for sale ahead of time. Members could commit ahead of time to buying items. Fish and plants would be bagged and brought to the parking lot. It would be set up like a tailgating event. You would go to the member with the fish plants or equipment you were buying and pickup your items. There may be the opportunity to buy other items if members brought additional bagged fish or plants. Masks would be required. Being in Staunton it would be a great opportunity for you to stock your tank.
