OUR JULY MEETING WILL BE OUR BOWL SHOW, WE ARE HOLDING THE JULY MEETING ONE WEEK EARLIER ON JULY 20TH, AT LOGO ADVANTAGE. THE MEETING WILL START AT 7:00, AND BOWL SHOW ENTRIES MUST BE ON TABLES READY FOR JUDGING BY 8:00 PM. WE PLAN TO HAVE A CELEBRITY JUDGE TO HELP WITH THE JUDGING PROCESS. AS IN OUR PAST SHOW, PRIZES WILL BE GIVEN OUT IN THE FORM OF MINI AUCTION BUCKS, THAT WINNERS CAN USE FOR OUR MONTLY AUCTIONS. WE WILL ALSO HAVE A "PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD" SELECTED BY MEMBERS VOTING FOR THEIR MOST FAVORITE ENTRY. RULES, CLASSES, AND GENERAL INFORMATION WILL BE LISTED HERE. STEPS TO A SUCCESSFUL BOWL SHOW This years JRAS BOWL SHOW is on Wednesday, July 20, 2022. It is on the third Wednesday of July. weekend. ALL ENTRIES MUST BE ON TABLES BY 8:00 PM I hope you bring at least one fish to the show. You will learn something about fish keeping along the way by doing so. Here are the six things you should know to get your fish to and from a BOWL SHOW without harm to your fish, in other words, a successful BOWL SHOW: 1. Make sure the fish you bring were living in water of the best quality you can provide. If you are doing routine weekly water changes or at least a couple times a month your are providing your fish good water that has little build up of pollutants. If you are doing so, your fish are almost certainly in good shape. If you are not, you can catch up by doing daily or every other day water changes of about 50% for a week and then once a week thereafter. If your fish are living in water with high pollutants levels because of few or infrequent water changes, they are stressed and if caught and placed in good water, the change can result in a bad result, including death or disease. 2. Most fish can simply be caught with a net and bagged or placed in good water in a five-gallon bucket for transport to the show. But if you catch a fish, particularly one with long flowing fins, in a net and it violently struggles when you remove it from the water, the net can cause fin or scale damage. The fish can still be caught in a net but does not have to be removed from the water. The fish can be transferred under water while still in the net into a plastic or glass container. Guppies, angelfish, and most other fish with long flowing fins are best captured in this manner. It is even better if you can figure out how to avoid the net altogether. If your fish does incur fin damage, MELIFIX often will help repair the split overnight. 3. I like to transport my fish to and from the show in a five-gallon bucket. They cannot jump out of a five-gallon bucket if it has only a gallon or two of water in it. Of course, for the BOWL SHOW you can transport your fish in the bowl or tank you are going to show your fish in. Just be sure to cover the bowl or tank with a towel or clear plastic cling wrap held on with a rubber band to prevent the fish from jumping in transport. Also fish are quite docile in the dark, so if you can transport the bucket, bowl or tank with a dark colored towel over it to block out the light, all the better. 4. There is no supplied air at our BOWL SHOWS. Your fish needs oxygen. Fish that breathe air like gouramis, bettas, and corydoras have no problem with this. Other fish like livebearers, tetras, barbs, and cichlids are at your mercy. So be kind and put the fish in water with the maximum surface area and shallowest water that is appropriate for the size of fish you have. Tanks are designed to have the maximum surface area no matter how deep the water is. But you do not have to fill a tank or bowl to the top. The shallower the water is the more oxygen gets to the bottom of the tank. Fish in shallow water (1 to 5 inches deep) can survive for months without aerating the water. Bowls, on the other hand have more or less surface area depending on how full of water they are. Fill them to the level that provides the maximum surface area. If that level is too shallow for your fish, please find a larger bowl. 5. BOWL SHOWS are great for beginners because all the water is usually brought from home. So there is no concern about changes in water quality as when you use the water from the BOWL SHOW location. But if you are bringing a large tank or have a spill and need more water from the site, you need to use the tap water at the site of the BOWL SHOW. It needs to be at about the right temperature, a 5-degree difference does not matter. It needs to be dechlorinated. You need to know how to dechlorinate it if the club has not provided dechlorinated water. I like to use the maximum dechlorination possible. Read the bottle, it will tell you the maximum amount to add per gallon 6. BRING YOUR OWN WATER! ONLY USE WATER FROM SHOW LOCATION IN AN EMERGENCY. JRAS 2022 MEMBERS BOWL SHOW RULES WEDNESDAY JULY 20, 2022 1 – only one fish per bowl unless the class requires or allows more. 2 – bowl must have at least one flat side so judges can see unobstructed view of fish 3 – no decorations are allowed inside or outside of the bowl unless it is a shrimp bowl 4 - no painted sides or bottom – hey – only a bare bowl is acceptable 5 - a bowl is defined as a regular all-glass fish bowl or any normal glass or acrylic aquarium 6 – lights and heaters are not allowed. This is why the BOWL SHOW is in July. 7 – no air will be provided – there are only a few outlets in the room—if you must have air for your fish, you must provide the equipment including extension cords. But you should not need it. You can maximize the oxygen getting to your fish if the water is clean, the surface area is the max it can be, and the water depth is low but still allows the fish to swim normally. 8 – You can provide a cover if you want. JRAS will supply plastic cling wrap to cover the bowls or aquariums. 9 – Decisions of the Judge(s) are final. 10 – Judge(s) can combine classes if there are not sufficient entrants in a class or classes. Basically if there is only one or two entries in a class, they will be moved to another class at the judge’s discretion. 11. - YOU MUST BE A PAID UP MEMBER OF JRAS IN GOOD STANDING TO PARTICIPATE If you do not have a small aquarium to display your fish in, JRAS will loan you a small plastic aquarium. There will be a limited number available (around 20) on the day of the BOWL SHOW. The only cost is that the aquariums be returned clean and dry to the box you got it from. Towels will be provided so you can do this easily. JRAS 2022 CLASSES 1. ANGELFISH & DISCUS 2. DWARF CICHLIDS (rams, apistos, small Africans, (UNDER 4”) 3. ALL OTHER CICHLIDS 4. JULY 24TH MEETING AND PICNIC WAS A HUGE SUCCESS, WITH ABOUT 28 MEMBERS AND FAMILY ATOURTENDING. LEE SHADBOLT, GAVE A FANTASTIC PRESENTATION ON THE BUILD OF HIS BACKYARD POND, WITH FABULOUS PHOTOS, AND DETAILS, AS ONLY OUR PRESIDENT COULD DO, FULL OF GREAT IDEAS FOR THE FUTURE POND BUILDER. NOT TO BE FORGOTTEN, WAS THE FINISHED RESULT, COMPLETE WITH IT'S INHABITANTS, (ALL NAMED BY LEE'S DAUGHTER BY THE WAY!) THERE WERE SOME STORMS THAT MOVED THROUGH THE AREA, AND WHILE SOME THOUGHT WE MIGHT GET A BIT WET, THE RAINS SUBSIDED AND THE SKY CLEARED AND THE MEETING WAS ON. SO FOR THE FIRST MEETING IN PERSON, IN OVER A YEAR AND A HALF, OUR PRESIDENT, LEE AND HIS WIFE CHRISTIE, GRACIOUSLY SHARED THEIR BACKYARD FOR OUR GET TOGETHER. WE HAD ABOUT 28 PEOPLE TAKE PART AND THE SOCIAL INTERACTION WAS STRONG AND EVERYONE SEEMED TO ENJOY THE IN PERSON INTERACTION. WE STARTED THE MEETING WITH A GREAT SELECTION OF BARBEQUE FOOD, FRIED CHICKEN WITH ALL THE FIXINGS, AND PLENTY OF SIDES TO KEEP EVERYONE HAPPY AND WELL FED. THERE WAS CHILLED WATERMELON AFTERWARDS, THAT HIT THE SPOT AND EVERYONE MUNCHED AND WERE FOCUSED ON OUR PRESIDENTS LECTURE ON PONDS. I HAVE PERSONALLY BEEN A WITNESS TO SEVERAL TALKS ON PONDS AND POND BUILDS OVER THE YEARS AND THIS WAS ONE OF THE BEST I HAVE WATCHED. WHILE THERE WERE A FEW QUESTIONS AFTERWARDS, LEE PRETTY MUCH HAD MOST OF THE ANSWERS DURING HIS TALK, SO EVERYONE LEFT KNOWING ALL THERE WAS TO KNOW ABOUT HIS POND BUILD. AFTER THE LECTURE, WE HAD OUR MONTHLY MINI AUCTION, WHICH I THINK WAS A BIG HIT WITH FOLKS AND SOMETHING WE WERE ALL LOOKING FORWARD TO EXPERIENCING. I BELEIVE THERE WERE ABOUT 30+ ITEMS AND FOLKS GOT SOME GREAT ITEMS FOR REASONABLE PRICES.
