OUR JULY 24TH MEETING AND PICNIC WAS A HUGE SUCCESS, WITH ABOUT 28 MEMBERS AND FAMILY ATTENDING.  LEE SHADBOLT, GAVE A FANTASTIC PRESENTATION ON THE BUILD OF HIS BACKYARD POND, WITH FABULOUS PHOTOS, AND DETAILS, AS ONLY OUR PRESIDENT COULD DO, FULL OF GREAT IDEAS FOR THE FUTURE POND BUILDER.  NOT TO BE FORGOTTEN, WAS THE FINISHED RESULT, COMPLETE WITH IT'S INHABITANTS, (ALL NAMED BY LEE'S DAUGHTER BY THE WAY!)

THERE WERE SOME STORMS THAT MOVED THROUGH THE AREA, AND WHILE SOME THOUGHT WE MIGHT GET A BIT WET, THE RAINS SUBSIDED AND THE SKY CLEARED AND THE MEETING WAS ON. SO FOR THE FIRST MEETING IN PERSON, IN OVER A YEAR AND A HALF, OUR PRESIDENT, LEE AND HIS WIFE CHRISTIE, GRACIOUSLY SHARED THEIR BACKYARD FOR OUR GET TOGETHER.  WE HAD ABOUT 28 PEOPLE TAKE PART AND THE SOCIAL INTERACTION WAS STRONG AND EVERYONE SEEMED TO ENJOY THE IN PERSON INTERACTION.

WE STARTED THE MEETING WITH A GREAT SELECTION OF BARBEQUE FOOD, FRIED CHICKEN WITH ALL THE FIXINGS, AND PLENTY OF SIDES TO KEEP EVERYONE HAPPY AND WELL FED.  THERE WAS CHILLED WATERMELON AFTERWARDS, THAT HIT THE SPOT AND EVERYONE MUNCHED AND WERE FOCUSED ON OUR PRESIDENTS LECTURE ON PONDS.

I HAVE PERSONALLY BEEN A WITNESS TO SEVERAL TALKS ON PONDS AND POND BUILDS OVER THE YEARS AND THIS WAS ONE OF THE BEST I HAVE WATCHED.  WHILE THERE WERE A FEW QUESTIONS AFTERWARDS, LEE PRETTY MUCH HAD MOST OF THE ANSWERS DURING HIS TALK, SO EVERYONE LEFT KNOWING ALL THERE WAS TO KNOW ABOUT HIS POND BUILD.

AFTER THE LECTURE, WE HAD OUR MONTHLY MINI AUCTION, WHICH I THINK WAS A BIG HIT WITH FOLKS AND SOMETHING WE WERE ALL LOOKING FORWARD TO EXPERIENCING.  I BELEIVE THERE WERE ABOUT 30+ ITEMS AND FOLKS GOT SOME GREAT ITEMS FOR REASONABLE PRICES.

                                                        FEATURED SPEAKER       Dr. Michi Tobler

Ever since childhood, Michi has had a weird obsession with fish and other animals that live in water.  Studying biology and becoming a scientist has allowed him to make his passion his profession.  Today, Michi primarily studies the ecology and evolution of fish species in Latin America, allowing him to travel to exotic places and observing fish in their natural environments.  In addition, Michi studies the genetics and physiology, and behavior of fish in his laboratory at K-State.  At work, he oversees a fish facility with over 250 fish tanks, all devoted to livebearers.  And yes, he still keeps fish tanks at home too.

“Livebearers: What they are, where to find them, and how to keep them”

Livebearers of the family Poeciliidae are among the most popular aquarium fishes and can be found in pretty much every pet store

around the globe.  They are often considered good fish for beginners to keep.  But there is more to them than guppies, mollies,

platys, and swordtails.  In fact there are almost 280 species of poeciliids, that occur from North Carolina all the way south to

Argentina.  I will provide an overview of the different groups of livebearers, their reproduction, and the ways they have adapted

to all kinds of weird habitats.  I will be able to show pictures and tell stories from over 30 collection trips throughout Latin America and share experiences from 25 years of keeping livebearers.  I am happy to answer any questions you might have about livebearers, fish keeping, and observing fish in their natural habitats.

EASY TECHNIQUES FOR PHOTOGRAPHING YOUR FISH AND AQUARIUM

SEPTEMBER ZOOM MEETING:

JRAS will be holding its September 23rd meeting as a ZOOM MEETING, for our second virtual meeting during this pandemic.

When we mention David Snell, most of you think of Dave as our ever prominent Auctioneer. Dave has done a stellar job of being our official auctioneer during our larger events, so he is well known throughout the mid atlantic fish clubs. One of the other areas Dave has been very interested in is photographing his fish, tanks and documenting some of his various collecting trips. He spoke with the JRAS folks about 4 years ago, This may be a very good topic to embrace right now with the ever present heath issues and the fact that we are not able to show off our fish and aquariums as easily to others. Maybe we can embrace some of his ideas to show off our hobby to other members through our new website. In the forum section, you can post photos in the "GALLERY" link.

here is the ZOOM invite and link to attend the meeting:

** IF YOU ARE HAVING PROBLEMS LINKING TO THE MEETING, PLEASE CONTACT DAVID SOMBACH.
